From quiet observer to confident contributor: Serenity’s story
Starting out
erenity, in her 20s, has worked at Huntly Joinery for three years. As the only female on the shop floor — and in a class of 15 — she was initially shy and reserved.
She rarely volunteered answers and kept responses brief when asked directly.
Learning that counts
Serenity showed strong focus and applied her learning at work and at home.
“I have learnt that not everyone learns the same, this has made me extra patient with people, giving short, thorough instructions.”
“At home it has helped me properly understand my family’s emotions and thoughts through body language.”
Turning intent into action
She stood out when setting SMART goals, creating clear and achievable targets around attendance and gaining her driver licence — and took pride in the progress she made.
Making a difference
As her confidence grew, Serenity began asking questions, sharing ideas, and reading aloud in both English and Te Reo Māori.
By graduation, she delivered a presentation on a workplace issue and spoke openly about her learning. She now communicates more clearly, shows greater patience, and contributes more confidently within her team — supporting stronger collaboration on the job.
