Empowered to Lead

Building confident, capable workplace leaders

Great leadership isn’t developed in a day.

Empowered to Lead takes a different approach to traditional short-form leadership training. The programme is delivered through regular sessions over a number of weeks, giving emerging and frontline leaders time to learn a skill, put it into practice in the workplace, then return to the group to reflect, problem-solve and build on what they have learned.

Face-to-face delivery is at the heart of the programme. Participants learn alongside colleagues in small groups, guided by experienced Aspire2 Workplace Communication tutors who understand frontline workplaces and are skilled at working with employees at all levels.

This ongoing, practical approach helps new leadership behaviours become part of everyday work, rather than something participants hear about in training but struggle to implement afterwards. The goal is visible, embedded change that strengthens communication, team performance and productivity.

Learn it. Apply it. Build on it. Lead differently.

1. What is the Empowered to Lead leadership development programme?

Empowered to Lead is Aspire2 Workplace Communication’s practical leadership development programme for emerging and frontline leaders in New Zealand. Rather than being a one-off training event, the programme is delivered through regular, guided sessions over a number of weeks. This gives participants time to learn new leadership skills, apply them in the workplace, reflect on what happened and build on their learning in the next session.

The programme develops practical skills across six key areas: leading yourself, communicating with impact, leading your team, navigating change, solving problems and driving results.

2. Who is leadership training for?

Empowered to Lead is designed for emerging leaders, frontline leaders, team leaders, supervisors and employees preparing to step into leadership.

It is particularly valuable for people who have been promoted because they are experienced, technically capable and respected by their team, but have had limited formal leadership development. The programme helps bridge the gap between being great at your job and being confident leading other people.

3. Why is Empowered to Lead delivered over several weeks?

Leadership skills develop through practice, not just theory. Delivering Empowered to Lead over a number of weeks gives participants time to learn new skills, apply them with their teams, reflect on the results and then build on their experience in the next session.

This learn, apply and build approach supports embedded learning and helps organisations see practical changes in leadership behaviour, communication, team performance and productivity.

4. What leadership skills will participants develop?

Participants develop practical workplace leadership skills including communicating effectively, running team meetings, delegating tasks, giving feedback, motivating employees, managing accountability, solving problems and supporting teams through change.

The programme also develops self-awareness and helps leaders understand how their communication and behaviour can influence the performance of their team.

5. Does the course help new managers and team leaders manage people?

Yes. A major focus of Empowered to Lead is helping new managers, supervisors and team leaders develop practical people management skills.

Participants learn how to lead former teammates, give clear instructions, delegate effectively, provide respectful feedback, hold people accountable and manage everyday leadership conversations. These are often some of the biggest challenges people face when they first become responsible for leading a team.

6. Does the programme include communication skills for leaders?

Yes. Effective communication is at the heart of good leadership and is a core part of Empowered to Lead.

Participants develop skills to communicate with greater clarity and impact, listen actively, give effective instructions and feedback, lead team discussions and approach challenging workplace conversations with greater confidence.

7. Does leadership training cover managing change and problem solving?

Yes. Navigating change and solving everyday workplace problems are two of the programme’s core leadership development areas.

Participants develop practical approaches to workplace change, problem-solving and decision-making. They also learn how to communicate effectively during change and support their teams through new processes, expectations and challenges.

8. Is Empowered to Lead self-directed leadership training?

No. Empowered to Lead is guided by experienced Aspire2 Workplace Communication tutors who are used to working with frontline employees, emerging leaders and people at different levels within an organisation.

Participants learn through facilitated sessions, practical activities, workplace examples and group discussion, with opportunities to apply their learning between sessions. This provides structure, support and accountability while keeping the leadership development practical and relevant.

9. How is Empowered to Lead delivered?

Empowered to Lead is designed as a guided leadership development programme delivered through regular sessions over a number of weeks. Face-to-face workplace delivery provides the strongest opportunity for discussion, participation, practical application and peer learning, and is our recommended approach where possible.

Flexible delivery options are also available to accommodate different organisations, locations and teams.

10. Can leadership training be tailored to our organisation?

Yes. Empowered to Lead can be tailored to reflect the realities of your workplace. Where appropriate, we can incorporate your organisation’s workplace materials, processes, examples and real leadership challenges into the learning.

This makes the training relevant to participants’ day-to-day roles and helps them put their new leadership skills into practice immediately.

11. Is leadership training available throughout New Zealand?

Yes. Aspire2 Workplace Communication works with organisations throughout New Zealand. Empowered to Lead can support organisations with a single workplace or teams operating across multiple locations.

Talk to us about your team, locations and work patterns and we can discuss the most effective delivery approach.

12. Can Empowered to Lead complement our existing workplace training?

Yes. Empowered to Lead has been developed from Aspire2 Workplace Communication’s experience delivering regular workplace learning to New Zealand employees.

For organisations already developing their people’s communication, literacy, numeracy, digital or workplace skills, leadership development can provide a natural next step for employees moving into team leader, supervisor or frontline leadership roles.

13. Is the Empowered to Lead leadership programme funded?

Empowered to Lead is a paid leadership development programme, so participants are not restricted by the eligibility criteria that apply to funded workplace training.

This gives organisations greater flexibility to include emerging leaders, supervisors, team leaders or other employees who would benefit from leadership development, without needing to meet Tertiary Education Commission funding eligibility requirements.

14. Can we combine funded workplace training with paid leadership training?

Yes. Organisations may be able to combine funded Aspire2 Workplace Communication training with the paid Empowered to Lead programme to create a cost-effective staff development pathway.

For example, eligible employees may participate through funded workplace training while other team members participate through the paid leadership programme. We can work with you to structure the training appropriately and ensure participant skill levels are suitable for effective group learning.
